Appeals & Waivers
Appeal Process:
Step 1: The Student or Parent/Guardian initiates the appeal process via the school counselor.
Step 2: The Supervisor approves the appeal and changes the student’s level or the Supervisor does not approve the appeal.
Waiver Request Process:
Step 1: If the Supervisor does not approve a change of level, the parent may request a Waiver form from the Supervisor.
Step 2: The Parent/Guardian and the Student complete the Parent/Guardian & Student Waiver form.
Step 3: Supervisor reviews Waiver form for completion.
Step 4: Counselor will:
1. Check no that there are no more than 2 waivers per student
2. Make Genesis change, contingent upon space in the class
Important Clarification: Waiver requests are all contingent upon availability in the current schedule/classroom.
The deadline for submitting Completed Waivers from Parents/Guardians to Supervisors was June 19, 2024. The Supervisor will verify all completed forms and send them to the Counseling Department for review of availability.
Waiver Implications
There are no waivers for:
Advanced Placement (AP)
Courses that skip over content (such as 6th Grade Pre-Algebra, 7th Grade Algebra and 8th Grade Geometry)
The next course in a sequence if a student failed the course prior in the sequence.
Please note the following:
No withdrawal at any time for any reason for a course where a student has been waived into.
No reduction of the pacing of the course.
No extra supports or scaffolds.
No grade inflation or curves.
No more than two waiver requests per school year will be considered.
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
Transition to more rigorous courses might come with challenges, potentially resulting in lower grades, thereby impacting transcripts, GPA and future placements. Such transition and struggle can often increase academic stress on students and can lead to mental health concerns for students.
If a student was not recommended by the counselor or Supervisor for a level change, this means the student’s data indicates a lack in some of the necessary prerequisite skills needed for success in that course. Teachers will not be able to provide supplemental instruction for students waived in who lack necessary prerequisite skills for that course.
Once the course schedule is finalized, no modifications will be allowed for your child's schedule. It is important to consider this commitment carefully before proceeding.
