Dr. Thomas Toohey joined the district in July of 2021. He serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Pupil-Special Services in Edison, where he advocates for the district’s most exceptional students.
Prior to joining Edison as a building Principal, Dr. Toohey led Lawrence Intermediate School, where he established himself as an instructional leader and played a key role in guiding the educational community toward a child-centered approach. His previous experience as the Director of Special Services for the Hazlet Township Public School District helped hone his organizational capacity, fiscal responsibility, and legal acuity.
Dr. Toohey began his administrative career as the Tri-District Supervisor of Special Education for Atlantic Highlands Elementary School, Highlands Elementary School, and Henry Hudson Regional School. In October 2012, he was appointed as the Tri-District Homeless Liaison and was called upon to support one of the most severely affected areas of the Jersey Shore during Hurricane Sandy. Ensuring the educational stability for these students was both an emotional and professional challenge unparalleled in his career.
Dr. Toohey has presented nationally on topics such as Behavioral Threat Assessment and Title IX regulations. Beyond his administrative experience, Dr. Toohey has demonstrated a strong commitment to community involvement and leadership. He served as an elected member of the governing body in Point Pleasant Beach from 2014 to 2019 and has been actively involved with the Special Olympics of New Jersey, Parents of Autistic Children, and the Best Day Foundation. Dr. Toohey resides in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, with his wife, Suzanne, and their two sons, Abe (13) and Beau (11).
